Well, given that the wedding will be in my natal city I would like to give you a brief introduction to it. Puebla is the capital city of the state of Puebla and has around 2 million people, quite a difference on size compared to Mexico city which has around 20 m people! It is east to Mexico City and 3 hours from the Atlantic coast of Veracruz.
The city of Puebla was founded around 1600’s as an intermediate point for the traders travelling between the Port of Veracruz and Mexico City. It is said Puebla was designed by the angels and the streets sketched perfectly squared with gold and silver threads. You will find that the naming system of the streets is based on a numerical system, with numeration increasing as the streets get further apart to town. I like this system but Stian found it strange!
Nowadays Puebla is the fifth biggest city (or so I remember) in size. Some of the main industries in the city are the car production – VW produced the New Beetle model there -, and education – in addition to the State’s University there’s plenty of private Universities and students from all around Mexico and other countries in America (America meaning the continent and not USA).
Puebla is growing and absorbing all the towns around it. Some I like quite a lot are Cholula – home of a powerful pre-Hispanic culture which built the Pyramid of Cholula -, and Atlixco, a town with one of the best weathers in the world where you can contemplate amazing views of the volcanoes surrounding Puebla. One of them, the Popocatepetl has been spewing gas and ashes now and then since 1994, but nothing to worry about.
The best of Puebla, as Stian can certify, is the food. There are options available for those with aversion to the chile but, if you dare a bit, you will always find it tastes better with a hint of chile! As an example see the link to the Chiles en Nogada, a dish served during the wedding of Tita’s nice in the movie “Como agua para chocolate”.
